Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
