Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
