The royal figure surrenders his honor as the Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
He has faced increasing attention over his links with Jeffrey Epstein.

Prince Andrew is relinquishing his titles, among them the York's Duke, he has announced in a own words.

He has been under growing pressure over his links with convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein, with calls for the monarchy to take action against him.

That now seems to have led to the royal deciding to willingly give up his designations and to give up involvement of the prestigious order.

In his announcement he said he continued to "vigorously dispute the accusations against me".

"In consultation with the sovereign, and my immediate and wider family, we have agreed the ongoing allegations about me distract from the duties of the monarch and the royal household," said a announcement from him.

"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my obligation to my family and country first.

"I uphold my decision five years ago to step back from public life.

"With the monarch's approval, we believe I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer hold my title or the awards which have been bestowed on me. As I have said before, I vigorously deny the allegations against me."

He has encountered a series of scandals, such as a court case he resolved with an accuser, doubts about his finances and his association with an alleged intelligence operative.

He will remain a royal - but will cease to be the Duke of York, a title granted from his the late Queen, the late Queen Elizabeth.

Andrew had already stopped to be a "working royal" and had given up the use of his His Royal Highness designation and no longer was seen at official royal events. His position now will be even more lessened.

His former spouse will be known as Sarah and no longer the Duchess, but their offspring will persist to have the title of princesses.

The royal has been under intense scrutiny over his connections with disgraced financier the financier, more lately including inquiries about when he had actually severed communication.

In his media discussion, Prince Andrew had said that he had cut off all ties with the financier after they had been pictured together in the city in late 2010.

But emails sent in early 2011 later came to light suggesting that he had privately remained in touch with him, such as swapping a message: "Remain connected and we'll play some more soon!"

There had been growing frustration in the royal household at the issues that persisted to surround the royal.

Soon a posthumous memoir by the accuser will be published which is anticipated to cast further focus on his connection with Ms Giuffre and Epstein.
