The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
