No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
