Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
