Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Rebuke
Personalities from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Post
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
“What a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from His Own Party
Some GOP elected officials also voiced disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his party to justify the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
