A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
