I believed I nicked it - Carey on overturned decision.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he thought he had feathered the ball when he was overturned on Decision Review System on day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test against England.
After surviving on 72, Carey went on to make a excellent 106 to help the home side finish on 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.
The Key Moment
The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey attempted a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.
The England team lodged a strong appeal, certain they had heard an edge, but umpire Ahsan Raza was unmoved.
Following skipper Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the footage examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike although this appeared before the ball had passed the bat.
Gaffaney further stated he was of the opinion there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.
Consequently, Carey was given not out.
"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," stated Carey.
"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."
Ongoing Scrutiny
There has been debate about 'the sound wave technology' throughout the series after a number of unclear moments.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated the touring side may take this most recent incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.
"There have been concerns about it for the whole series. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's where we are."
Emotional Century
Carey's century was his maiden in the Ashes.
It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose father passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by pointing to the heavens.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," stated Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. It's hard not to get emotional. It was a fantastic feeling."
Previous Ashes Drama
Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.
He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, leading to a heated final day.
On his reprieve he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."
"Perhaps luck was on my side."
