Hardline Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile's Next President.
After a definitive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Win
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his unwavering socially conservative views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to combat rising violence and significantly curb migration.
He repeatedly pointed to migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he issued an final demand for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans included U.S.-style measures such as erecting detention centers, high walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.
Part of a Broader Trend
Numerous analysts see Kast's victory as fitting into a broader rightward wave in South America, following recent electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts also frame it as a part of the established rotation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Solid Mandate
In spite of his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast will not hold an overall majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when all conservative parties are counted together.
This political landscape could challenge his plans, including a pledge to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not offered concrete steps.
"We have several aspects about how a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not said how he will achieve them," said a political science analyst.
The analyst continued, "Regarding the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. However the area with much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse throughout the race."
