Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The video footage, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously served in military or security capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an pledge to protect and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should reject improper directives. No one has to execute orders that contravene the law or our national charter."
Trump's Furious Response
The clip appeared to provoke a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats published a combined declaration condemning the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged digital publications and recant his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.
Officials' Strong Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also published a response.
"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who love this country and swore an vow to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the national charter and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must join forces and condemn the former president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and determine all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is addressing," the official declared. "There are sitting members of the federal government who worked together to arrange a video message to members of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
