The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
