Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
