Afghan Rulers Used Abandoned British Gear to Track Down Afghans That Served With Western Forces, Investigation Learns
A whistleblower has revealed an official investigation that British authorities failed to secure confidential devices permitting the militant group to locate local individuals who collaborated with international military.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk
Person A, known as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the information breach were advised to change residences and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from the Taliban.
MPs are looking into the Conservative government's response of a massive disclosure of personal details concerning nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to relocate to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.
The Information Breach Occurred
A spreadsheet with private information, including identities, contact details and in some cases family information, was mistakenly released by a staff member stationed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.
The incident became known only in August 2023, when the names of nine people who had sought to relocate to the UK surfaced on social media.
Taliban Capabilities
“There seems to be a false assumption that Afghan rulers are without the same sort of facilities that we have,” Person A informed lawmakers.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can trace your precise location. That is what intelligence groups did.”
Under inquiry about if militant forces possessed advanced decryption, Person A stated: “They have complete capability.”
Aftermath of the Security Lapse
Preliminary research submitted to the committee suggested that approximately fifty relatives and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.
A legal restriction about the leak was implemented in late 2023 and restricted all details concerning it from media reporting until recently.
Security Recommendations
Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with informed affected households they were working with that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.
“We advised that they moved when possible and switched their contact details. That constituted the primary information that, if authorities had access to these details, would result in identification and capture,” Person A explained.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower contested that internal investigation carried out by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to conclude that the possession of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not confronting the authorities; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”
The source explained disturbing treatment experienced by affected individuals, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“We have had young kids who have had their arms broken to pressure relatives to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
